GARDEN TRAIN ANNOUNCES 1ST ANNUAL BROOKLYN SCHOOL GARDENS CRAWL

Announced August 2018

Garden Train, the District 15 School Gardens Consortium, will be hosting its first annual Brooklyn School Gardens Crawl in partnership with Grow to Learn!  We invite the community to participate this free, family-friendly event.

Renowned school and community gardens advocate and food justice activist will be the featured speaker at the Kickoff.  Current participating school gardens include:  PS 15, PS 29, PS 39, PS 133, PS 154 and PS 295.

School gardens are the thriving parts of our schools that are visible to our neighbors and passersby. As such, gardens are wonderful vehicles to strengthen ties between schools and community. Garden Train strongly believes that by engaging with our school gardens, we are able to share our school-wide resources with the rest of the

district

On September 29 from 10 am to 2 pm, ten of our Garden Train member public school gardens will open their gates to further grow community. Participants will be able to tour the different gardens, connect with school gardeners across District 15 and enjoy a day of free activities. Activities will include arts and music, greening and composting, food and environmental justice events, and much more. Garden Train encourages you to visit that one garden you've always been curious about, three that share a common theme or even all ten! We can't wait for you to join us!

JULY 2018 NEWSLETTER

July 2018

Congratulations to our garden leaders for another school year of growth, but let's also recognize that gardens don't disappear because school is out for summer, which is the peak growing season. In fact, a lot of work goes into tending the gardens while the gates are closed, too.  Parents and staff members across D15 work very hard to recruit and train volunteers over the summer.

NYC DOE LAUDS GARDEN TRAIN IN FEATURE ARTICLE

December 19, 2017

Excerpt: Garden Train, the City’s first-ever district-based school gardening consortium, is planting the seeds for school gardens in Brooklyn’s District 15 and beyond.

“First and foremost, school gardens build strong community ties and foster collaboration among students, teachers, parents, and neighbors,” said Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “District 15 is a leader in using school gardens to provide hands-on learning environments that teach students important lessons on nutrition, sustainability, and science.”
